If you haven't heard of Universe, it's an app that lets you make websites on your iphone (yes, that's a thing), and we're on a mission to make doing so as fast, easy, and accessible as possible, so that everyone can build their own corner of the internet. And whether that space is a place to show off your photography or art, advertise your business services, or even directly sell your product, we don't think complicated software or expensive computers should ever be what stands in the way of getting a website online. As a brand designer, you’ll be helping shape not only how Universe is seen and experienced by the world, but also how we engage with existing and new creators alike, and ultimately, help hundreds of thousands of people to make their mark on the world.

With a new Creative Director recently joining Universe, we’re poised to make a big push on all brand and marketing creative in the coming months, and are looking for a Brand Designer to join us in our efforts to evolve brand design holistically at the company.

One last important note before you dig into the details of this role; Universe is a distributed company, meaning you can work remotely from anywhere in the US, the whole company is scattered throughout, from South Carolina, to L.A and New York. We're also developing a (IRL) design studio in Brooklyn too; it'll become a hub which allows our local designers to meet and work in person or come to be inspired whenever they need it.

We’re looking for someone who has:

  • Excellent communication skills (both verbally and visually).
  • A strong visual sensibility, and a keen eye for aesthetics and detail.
  • Experience at appropriately balancing functional, pragmatic design solutions, with engaging experiences, a sense of irreverence, and a considered stylistic execution.
  • A stand-out portfolio that demonstrates strong typography, composition, and visual design skills.
  • Strong conceptual thinking and instincts around visual storytelling, which you're able to channel into narratives and messaging beyond static design work.
  • Ideally some experience with, or at a minimum, interest in combining and experimenting with design mediums; from static graphic design to motion graphics and 3D.
  • A keen interest in contemporary culture, trends, and technology, and a sense for when and how to incorporate these into their design work.
  • Ability to prioritise and manage their own time, and a sense of adaptability day-to-day.

You can expect to be spending your time :

  • Helping to drive forward the design in highly visible areas such as core marketing projects, advertising, and brand campaigns.
  • Helping to define and continually develop the brand’s visual identity, and how it shows up in the world at large.
  • Collaborating with the Creative Director closely, as well as other designers and cross-functional partners to execute on marketing and brand initiatives.
  • Presenting design work to cross-functional partners (outside of design), including to all levels of leadership.
  • Briefing, guiding, and collaborating with external creative partners on projects involving motion graphics, illustration, and 3D work.
